An interview with Deepika Padukone on 'Aarakshan'

Bollywood Beauty Deepika Padukone’s Cooking Lessons on the Set of ‘Aarakshan’

Knowing how to make the perfect, round Roti is a basic skill that is deemed a must-know by any Indian girl, even a successful star like Deepika Padukone. Deepika had to make rotis in Reliance Entertainment’s forthcoming blockbuster, ‘Aarakshan’, specifically for a song sequence. Not knowing that the sequence involved her actually making a roti, the Bollywood starlet froze on being presented with loose flour. With the whole unit waiting for her to get to action, Deepika just stood there. As with most girls’ first attempts at making the simple roti, Deepika’s also came out in abstract shapes, sizes and maps of unknown countries. Seeing her comical trials and her gradually getting covered in white flour, her co-star, Saif Ali Khan, came to her rescue, with not much success. Finally, director Prakash Jha stepped in with an innovative shortcut to a perfectly round roti.

In speaking about the episode, Prakash Jha commented, “It was nothing major. Deepika was pretty comfortable in the kitchen. I just helped her a little bit.”

Saif Ali Khan commented, “It was interestingly funny, reminded me of the scene in ‘Kaalia’, where Amit ji helps Parveen Babi ji to make an egg. (Laughs) Thank God it wasn’t an egg for Deepika.”

Deepika said, “I was so embarrassed, I can totally cook but roti is a challenge. As with life the most simplest of things sometimes get to be the hardest to master.”

From the makers of Box Office superhit, ‘Rajneeti’, ‘Aarakshan’ is a high voltage, socio-political drama based on one of the most contentious Indian government policies of caste-based reservations in government jobs and educational institutions. The film stars veteran of Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan, alongside the formidable Saif Ali Khan, beguiling Deepika Padukone and rising star of the Indian screen, Prateik.

Prepare for a controversial exploration of the corruption and caste discrimination that continue to hold back one of the world’s emerging superpowers and tie it to the dark ages, as Reliance Entertainment’s ‘Aarakshan’ causes waves across the nation and beyond from 12th August 2011.
