Viceroy’s House inspired by my family experience of Partition of India” says director Gurinder Chadha – Out in cinemas March 3rd

Gurinder Chadha reflects on family history for Viceroy’s House

“Viceroy’s House inspired by my family experience of Partition of India” says director Gurinder Chadha

Thursday 23rd February 2017, London, UK – Viceroy’s House, directed by Gurinder Chadha is releasing nationwide ‪on 3rd March 2017‬ and stars Hugh BonnevilleGillian AndersonHuma Qureshi and Manish Dayal. The film tells the true story of the final months of British rule in India and its release will coincide with the 70th Anniversary of the Independence of India and the founding of Pakistan.

British Asian director Gurinder Chadha‘s first research into the events of 1947 and Partition began following her participation in BBC programme “Who Do You Think You Are”, a look back into her family history.

To coincide with the release of Viceroy’s House, Chadha has invited her uncles Kalwant and Balwant Singh Chadha to share their incredible true stories and experiences of living through the Partition, experiences which inevitably helped the process of making Viceroy’s House.

Kalwant and Balwant Singh Chadha were featured on ITN News earlier this week, alongside Gurinder Chadha, to speak about the upcoming release of Viceroy’s House and the real life events, which they experienced in 1947.

I had to make a film about what happened in 1947 and how it effected generations since and also for my children who know nothing about what happened. Making Viceroy’s House was one of the most emotional experiences of my life,” Gurinder shared in the interview.
