University of Derby Hosts ‘Journey From Home; South Asian Servicemen & The First World War’ (By Anisha Kaur Johal)

Ever wondered about the role that South Asian’s played in the First World War?  Intrigued to learn more about the experiences of South Asian Servicemen during the First World War?  Well, make sure to attend the Journey From Home event at the University of Derby tomorrow evening, Tuesday 20th November 2018, 6:00pm-9:00pm.

The Journey from Home project is researching and making accessible the stories and experiences of South Asian men from many faiths (Sikh, Hindu, Muslim) who were part of the British forces during the First World War.  Those stories, histories and experiences will be used for reflection and to inspire discussions around identity, sacrifice, community and Remembrance for community groups in the UK today. This project is about unity in the community.

The event will share the experience of the soldiers from South Asia of different faiths, who are more usually addressed separately, despite serving together.  It aims to highlight the importance of supporting the current South Asian community to recognise its connection to the First World War to inform British society of the diversity of those that fought.

This event is free and is for everyone…students, staff, the general public.  There will be a lecture by the founder of the project, Kiran Sahota, and a serving serviceman.  Having met Kiran and discussed the inspiring projects that she is involved in, it is definitely not an event to be missed!
