SIKH LOOKS TO OPEN UP DOORS FOR BAME LAWYERS

SIKH LOOKS TO OPEN UP DOORS FOR BAME LAWYERS

Neelam Kaur Heera organises event in Birmingham to help inclusivity April 10, Birmingham, UK – The Law Society Equality Diversity and Inclusion Committee will be helping people of all backgrounds with aspirations of working in law to learn about the industry next week, at their first ever “I want that job” event. Sponsored by Acivico Ltd and supported by Birmingham City Council, the event is free to attend, taking place on April 18 at Birmingham Council House. Full details can be found below.

Neelam Kaur Heera who is on the board of the Law Society’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, says the event aims to give a leg-up to young people and women from a BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnic) background, who she feels are underrepresented in the industry. Neelam said of the event, “I organised this because I have concerns about the lack of diversity and inclusion in the Midlands in the Law industry. I have found that women from a BAME background in particular are struggling to reach higher positions in their law firms.

We have organised this free event for aspiring lawyers and solicitors to build a stronger relationship with the committee. In the long term, the Law Society will be offering more mentoring and support. Attendees will get the chance to meet other lawyers/solicitors from a wide range of firms who will also be also offering a chance to come and speak to them on their own individual stalls. Neelam added, “Aspiring lawyers have a chance to speak to a solicitor first hand. This is something most law students will not get the chance to do. we need celebrate diversity and encourage people to stick to this profession even through it is a difficult route to go down.”
