Roko Cancer was founded by the Chawla family and Mr. Ajinder Pal Singh Chawla in memory of his wife Mrs Manjit Kaur Chawla, who lost her life to the much dreaded word Cancer at an early age. An effort that voiced its appeal loud and clear “Roko Cancer” – It could happen to you. The movement gained momentum on 16th Dec 2005 when the Trust launched its First Fully Equipped Mobile Breast Cancer Detection Unit for the semi urban and rural areas of Punjab, As volunteers and cause driven partners joined hands globally.

Roko Cancers aim is to fight Breast Cancer, Cervix Cancer, Prostate and Oral Cancer with passion and professionalism for lasting results and to help men and women help themselves and their families by providing awareness on Cancer, Detection, Sharing knowledge, Empowerment and Build Capacity.

Roko Cancer were fortunate to fund a treatment room in St. Joseph’s Hospice in Hackney in their newly extended building on 18th Nov 2004. Mrs. Sandra Howard performed the unveiling ceremony of the plaque for this treatment room. Awareness of Breast Cancer to the diverse communities through audio visual, media and other means in being propagated among the ethnic communities in their own languages in UK.

Roko are a registered charity and they work in various rural locations with poor communities in India to help detect, halt and eradicate cancer at an early stage. This is done through mobile cancer detection units they use to hold camps in various locations around India.

 At the camp the Roko team have qualified, experienced doctors and nurses who undertake testing on anyone who visits the camp. Which focuses on detecting cancer early by providing leaflets, showing videos to educate individuals who visit the camp.

 

Since 2005, Roko Cancer have successfully carried out over 4,600 camps, examining over 600,000 patients who would not be able to afford these tests, resulting in over 3500 successful detections and treatment poor rural areas of India covering over 20 states.

This specific Charitable trust has been a pioneer in launching India’s first fully equipped, sophisticated Mobile Cancer Detection Units. Giving them the flexibility of conducting “Mammograms” and “Pap Smear/LBC” tests for women and “Oral Cancer Tests and counselling for de-addiction” for men in various urban, semi urban and rural areas.

 

The Mobile Detection Units are equipped to detect Breast, Cervix and Oral cancer. Roko Cancer also do diabetes, ECG and BP investigations/diagnosis as well. Mammography, oral screening operations and pap smears are performed by trained female doctors who are experts in their field and dedicated to the cause.

 

This charity was initially designed as a women’s empowering cancer care program, but now they have expanded and are helping men as well in the detection of Oral Cancer. There are now specialized sessions conducted for youngsters and adolescents on Tobacco Cessation to educate them at the earliest age possible

Roko Cancer have a solid and sustained track record of delivery since 2005. They are trying to get the younger generation more involved by doing more charity events to create more awareness. Last year they had Ben Nevis climb, half a marathon and a 10k runs.
