REVIEW: Statues
How do you deal with the loss of someone that you just got used to knowing? Statues explores this through the story of Yusuf, who gets to know his father after his death. Hidden secrets come out as Yusuf figures out who his father really was, despite him becoming aloof before he died.
It’s amazing how relatable this story is. Themes and dialogue are explored in a way that is realistic and not forced upon the audience. The characters don’t force their agenda on the audience either, giving a seamless narrative.
The play is a thoughtful and beautiful play, using language to push against our prejudices and open up our understanding. Urdu words are freely used and rarely defined.
Statues is currently playing at Bush Theatre until 9th November. Get your tickets here: https://www.bushtheatre.co.uk/event/statues/
