DALBIR KHANPUR BHUJHANGY GROUP – TRIBUTE CONCERT

DALBIR KHANPUR BHUJHANGY GROUP – TRIBUTE CONCERT

Dalbir Khanpur Bhujhangy from the legendary group Bhujhangy Group, passed away Friday 28.11.08

Bhujhangy Group are the world’s longest running bhangra band. The group were founded in Smethwick, Birmingham, England in 1967. The family came to the United Kingdom in the mid-1950s. Dalbir Khanpur Bhujhangy was the senior lead singer of the band.

They were named Bhujhangy Group by the public – meaning “kids” – as they were still teenagers. Their first recording was “Teri Chithi Noon Parthan”, a 7″ EP recorded in 1967. It sold 100 copies, that the band sold themselves. This was released and distributed by the label, OSA Ltd.

Bhujhangy appeared on television in 1969 as part of the celebrations of the 500th birthday of Guru Nanak.

From the early 1970’s, the songs; “Gidhe Wich Nach Baliye” “Tor Teri Balle Balle” “Chitte Dandan Uttue” “Bhabiye Akh Larr Gayee” “Dil De Ja Dil De Ja” and many more were the first recordings to combine traditional Asian sounds with modern western musical instruments and influences, a momentous step in the development of bhangra. They were the first popular band to create a major buzz in the Midlands (UK) in the late 60’s.

An impressive catalogue:

  • The Queens Silver Jubilee Asian Song Contest in 1977 was held at Wembley Conference where they were runners up and won many Asian song contests in the mid-eighties.
  • Bhujhangy Group were honoured to receive the first gold disc for a religious album Dukhian Di Pukar Guru Nanank Aaa Jaween 1979. They celebrated their first 25 years of Bhangra at the Silver Jubilee in 1992 at the Dome Birmingham, UK.
  • Appeared in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the pioneers of Bhangra music in the UK, since 1967.
  • Received an award from The House of Commons, Westminster, London for Punjabi Cultural and Bhangra music in the UK 2009.
  • Received a Life Time Achievement award by Brit Asia TV Hammersmith, London 2011.
  • They have recorded 50 albums and in 2012 they celebrated being in the Bhangra industry for 46 years.
