The Hindi poem ‘Betiyan’ ( बेटियां ) has been written by my mother, Dr. Param Preet Ghuman, and recited by me.

कहते हैं जिस घर बेटियां जन्म लेती हैं वहां सौभाग्य भी जन्म लेता है। जी हां, बेटियां बाबुल की रानियां होती हैं तो मांओं की बेस्ट फ्रेंड भी होती हैं। बेटियों के लिए यह कहावत भी मशहूर है कि घर की रौनक तो उनसे ही होती है।

The Hindi poem ‘Betiyan’ ( बेटियां ) talks about the deeply ingrained societal prejudices and gender discrimination practiced in our Indian society with respect to the birth of a girl child in the family. It is quite shocking to understand that on the one hand, we take pride in addressing India as ‘Bharat MATA’ – by adding the female tinge of ‘MATA’ to the name of the world’s largest democracy. However, on the other hand, we resort to killing the girl child inside the wombs of the mothers and do not even allow them to take birth in this beautiful world. Isn’t it grossly ironic and shocking to the core?

Every day, our heads hang down in collective shame when we hear and read about the ever-increasing cases of rapes, molestation, and sexual harassment of women. It is time for deep analysis and psychological introspection at the individual and societal level and this poem tries to bring out the contrasting human thoughts of gender discrimination existing in our Indian society. Hope this poem is able to stir the conscience of the masses and make us rightly think about the gender discrimination against the girl child in a humane, logical, and wise manner.
