BBC Asian Network’s Bollywood Mile for Sport Relief
BBC Asian Network presenter Tommy Sandhu ran his socks off yesterday (Sunday 21 March), to help raise money for Sport Relief. He was joined by over 700 BBC Asian Network listeners, staff and Asian celebrities, as they all clubbed together to complete the BBC Asian Network Bollywood Mile at Birmingham’s Sport Relief Mile in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham.
A host of Bhangra legends including H Dhami, Malkit Singh and KS Bhamrah ran alongside Tommy and Breakfast show presenter Adil Ray, who was recruiting ‘Mummy Cheerleaders’ on air last week, brought them along to cheer the team to the finish line.
Tommy commented: “What a day! Bhangra legends came out, our beautiful listeners were there in mass along with presenters and staff from the BBC Asian Network and of course the sun was out too! All in the name of Sport Relief! We brought our Bollywood and Bhangra flavour to the mile, making it the noisiest one of them all!”
H Dharmi said: “It’s a good cause and seeing everyone get together and trying to make a change is great. I feel proud representing the Asian community running here today in Birmingham.
Adil added: "It was a great event to be part of and I don't think the runners would have made it if it wasn't for our cheerleading or my pink tracksuit – that was probably a welcome distraction."
Tommy started training for the event weeks ago with a special warm-up session in on 19 February in Victoria Square, Birmingham. He was put through his paces by Hina and Co Bollywood Dance Group and welcomed some very helpful tips from Dame Kelly Holmes. He also received advice from Gabby Logan and Lawrence Dallaglio prior to the big event.
