THE SUICIDE SQUAD – THE TEAM THAT KEEPS ON GIVING

James Gunn has done it again! We all loved Guardians of the Galaxy with its dysfunctional team of Peter Quill/Star Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, Mantis and Groot. So it’s only natural that he does the same for DC with The Suicide Squad. Mixed with comedy, action and blood, Gunn gives us another team to love with everything that Marvel may not have been able to provide.

Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis), is a woman on a mission. To help her, she decides to create a ‘Taslk Force X’, which is headed by Bloodsport (Idris Elba). Other team members include: Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Peacemaker (John Cena), King Shark (voice by Sylvester Stallone), Ratcatcher II (Daniela Melchior) and Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchain). They have to travel to the South American island of Corto Maltese to take down a giant starfish called Starro – yes, you read that right.

Now, Gunn could’ve used all the tropes he used in Guardians of the Galaxy. But nope – this time is used the freedom that Warner gave him to delve a little more into the characters and humanise them, despite them being supervillains. What works so well too is that individually, they may seem dysfunctional and a complete mess. But when they come together, it’s ‘all for one and one for all”. We see a vulnerability to these supervillains that we don’t see in any other supervillain film; maybe except for Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. The spectacle of the action is a treat for all the senses and it’s something that is definitely made for the cinema. Each actor plays their part so well – especially Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller who takes no prisoners.

In the mist of chaos, this imperfectly perfect Squad is a thrilling watch and definitely sees Gunn having a blast making this film. Audiences know when a director is being held back and we can certainly see that Gunn has gone all out forThe Suicide Squad. The Suicide Squad is out in UK cinemas on 30th July 2021
