Born and bred in the UK, Romy from a very young age was Inspired by Ustaad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Ustaad Kuldeep Manak, Jazzy B, Surinder Kaur just to name a few. As a child when his friends use to call him out to play football after finishing schoolwork, Romy prefered to watch videotapes of Punjabi/Pakistani movies. After watching the Punjabi movie “Anakh Jattan Di”, things changed as he started taking extreme interest in Punjabi movies and music. The passion for Punjabi movies increased as he started to watch more and more. Even though he wasn’t from the Pind he was inseparable from Punjabi folk culture and was thoroughly inspired by these classic movies.He is a big fan of Yograj Singh, Sultan Rahi and Mustafa Qureshi. Surinder Kaur’s records were mostly played at home by family so Romy was surrounded by Folk Music.In his teens being a die-hard fan of Jazzy B he discovered Ustad Kuldeep Manak while listening to Jazzy B’s interviews. Jazzy specifically mentioned his Ustad Kuldeep Manak in many interviews. It was at this point when Romy bought his first tape “Ik Kurri Koonj Vargi” and then the collection of Punjabi Folk music did not stop. Even though the traditional upbringing in a Punjabi household helped him to stay close to the roots, culture and traditions. But watching old movies of these Legends and listening to the folk music enabled him to have a good command of the Punjabi language.
Romy’s playlist today would consist of : Jazzy B, Nachattar Chattha, JK, Chamkila, Lovely Nirman, Durga Rangila to name a few…He is determined to serve the Punjabi industry in the best way possible.
