You’d be surprised to know that a fashion designer hunt which eliminates all types of entry restrictions exists in India. Breaking barriers and predominantly spreading its reach through radio. Mirchi D’designer hasbeen spicing up the world of fashion for the last 4 years now. Solely created to give a platform to fashion designers to showcase their talent, MDD allows designers of all levels; regardless of age, education, experience or entry fees; tocompete and qualify through the same series of rounds…ensuring an equal platform for all. Dubbed the X- Factor of the Fashion Designing industry, MDD has over the last 4 years, grown in reach, accolades and popularity. Starting off in the city of Surat in2012,the event has successfully grown into a state level success twice over in 2013 and2014 respectively.

 

This year, the event made its first national stopover to the city of Kolkata. Redesigning Kolkata From a plethora of hopefuls and over a series of 3 qualifying rounds, 10of the best fashion designers were mentored and groomed in industry learnings, the aesthetics of fashion and then finally towards that runway to fame to change their lives forever. Holding the fort on the mentor side for MDD Kolkata was the impressive line-upof the best fashion designers and academicians from Kolkata. Jaya Misra, Amalin Datta and Sraboni Dutta ensured the Top 10of MDD shinned across the fashion runway preparing them for the all grand finale night. With themes as conventional as Androgyny and yet as diverse in approach as Young Popstars, Warrior Princess and more, the finale night was a celebration of fashion andentertainment. Heating up the runway were the finest models of West Bengal. Mumbai’s most sought after Stage Director, Yatin Gandhi choreographed the finale event. Hosting the night were the highly popular Mirchi RJs Avantika from Kolkata and Rahil from Gujarat. Performing live were the soulful duo S&A, Sukanti and Anushree. Celebrity judges for the finale night were the versatile Agnimitra Paul and the legendary Sharbari Datta. ‘We were delighted to see such an enthusiastic response! The event has grown from being a Surat-based event, to Gujarat state level and nowto a full-fledged benchmark trendsetter!

Now all the more, across India. Created by Radio Mirchi Surat and its loyal partners, Mirchi D’designer Kolkata isPresented by F Studio, Co-presented by Asahi Bemberg, Styled by FBB, in Association with Vipul Fashion and Initiated by Radio Mirchi. The Fashionistas behind MDD Kolkata! Immensely adding to the mentorship panel this year for Kolkata were some of the most prominent names in fashion academics and designing. Jaya Misra- Preliminary Rounds Judge/Mentor A self-made woman of substance, Jaya Misra has wowed the fashion industry in India andDubai with her dazzling collections from the house of Jaya Misra. Highly successful, she has designed for several leading Bollywood icons. She continues to expand her line and work between India and abroad. For MDD, she’s graciously contributed in mentoring the Top 10 for the finale night. Sraboni Dutta- Preliminary Rounds/Technical Whizz Well-known in the industry and highly respected in the fashion fraternity, Sraboni Dutta hasmore than two decades of experience in the academics of fashion. Heading Pinnacle, a design consultancy house which she kickstarted; the academically strong Sraboni hasbeen closing monitoring the participants technical aspects since the start. Amalin Datta- Special Celeb-Guest Judge (Preliminary Rounds) Graciously stepping in for Round 2, Amalin Datta, is the master of handwork! His garments can only be described as experiences, each lovingly created and delicately woven together.The ace designer and son of legendary Sharbari Datta is currently working on his new collection.

Making the Finale Night Panel Hotter Agnimitra Paul Popularly known as Agni, she is a designer with a difference! Staring her career in 1997 with her designer label ‘INGA’. Her designs ensembles express Simplicity, Values, Cultural Ethos, Differentiation and Modernity inan unbelievable way. Her focused ambition, innovative designs, speaking colours and custom formulations make her distinguished client list the who’s who from across the globe. Agnimitra recently gifted Mrs. Hillary Clinton a Kantha stole which was well appreciated and acknowledged bythe former US Secretary of State. Sharbari Datta The Godmother of the Fashion Industry! This woman rewrote the history books of the fashion scene in Kolkata. Working ahead of her time, her designs have always been cutting-edge, trendy and very chic. She’s contributed greatly to menswear andhas a clientele ranging from celebrities, sports personalities to global icons. Her innovativeness coupled with her innate sense of design, rich knowledge andanuncanny feel of the market have made heran unparalleled designer. She hasbeen awarded the Accessory Designer of the Year honour by Vijay Mallya at the Kingfisher Fashion Awards. Sharbari is truly a living legend. She is fashion royalty! The Winners Arpita & Piyali- Mirchi D’designer Kolkata Winners This unstoppable duo were declared title winners for Mirchi D’designer Kolkata. Their passion for standing out, working with natural fibres, and playing with bright colours has become their signature style. They credit their success to their parents who have long-supported them in achieving their dream. Swarita & Arup- First runners-upClassy, elegant and contemporary. Both final year fashion designers Swartia & Arup believing in translating their thoughts to fabric. Mixing both traditional and modern elements, they travelled extensively across West Bengal to achieve the desired look for their collection. Frenny & Tubun- Second runners-upThe Gujarati-Bengali duo have a keen eye for fashion and mixing traditional Indian elements into western outfits. Very popular with the crowd, Frenny & Tubun intend tokickstart their own line soon.
The top ten also consisted of Taniya Ghosh, Sambit & Rakhi, Asmita & Ekata, Samba Baran, Suman Barik, Satanu Sarkar and Tamoghna Mandal.
