Amazing Adventures, Magical Moments & Spiritual Stories…it’s all in The Gurus Song Adventure by IM1313 (By Anisha Kaur Johal)
The wait is over, it’s finally here…IM1313’s first storybook titled ‘The Gurus Song Adventure’! IM1313 is a non-profit organisation whose team are passionate about producing creative, engaging and high quality film, animation, music and stories about Sikhi. Founded by a group of parents in Coventry who strongly felt the need for their children to connect to their religious roots, history and identity, IM1313’s idea of an album became a reality in 2018 when they launched ‘My Best Friend’. Following the phenomenal success of the album, IM1313 are back with their latest project, The Khalsa Family Series, which commences with The Gurus Song Adventure.
Join Simran Singh in The Guru’s Song Adventure as he embarks upon a fun filled magical mission as he travels around the world on a quest to find the Sikh Gurus. At some stage in our lives we’ve all probably been in Simran’s shoes; wondering where the Gurus are, longing for a connection to Waheguru, yearning to learn more about Sikhi. At the start of the book, Simran prepares to embark upon a journey of a lifetime as he travels around the world in search for the Gurus. Accompanied by his family and friends, Simran learns how to connect with the Gurus and we even learn how this is possible…but I won’t spoil it for you, I’ll let you experience the magic for yourselves! By the end of the book Simran has completed his quest and seen all the Gurus. But that’s not all…he has experienced Waheguru and so can you! The very act of reading the book is like a meditation and by the end of it you’ve not only joined Simran on an amazing adventure, you’ve also done some simran yourself…what more could you want from a book?
Well, if that’s not enough for you, then the illustrations certainly will blow your mind. The extremely talented and gifted illustrator Ben Barter has done a perfect job of creating the pictures to accompany the story. Your eyes will be glued to the pages as the vibrancy, colourfulness and magic leaps out of the page and captivates your attention. You can even test yourself to see if you can spot the Gurus before they’re revealed on the pages. If you’re in awe of the Khalsa family characters, then you’ll most definitely be swept away with illustrations of the Gurus…they are by far the best that I’ve seen! Each page is saturated to the core with a plethora of colours, designs and artwork, you will undoubtedly notice something new each time you read it.
So, we’ve got a superb story line, incredible illustrations and creative characters…but nothing beats a good sing along! Yes, you can’t help but sing the story, it just doesn’t feel right if you don’t. Before you know it, your children have learnt the story off by heart and you won’t even need to read it to them. The book is a perfect companion to the album My Best Friend, especially the song ‘The Gurus Song’, which inspired the storybook. You can hear and watch the animated lullaby version sung by Taren Kaur here:
Although it’s so hard to choose a favourite from this book as I just absolutely love it all, the moral of the story really stands out for me: Waheguru is everywhere, even inside of each and everyone one of us. Most people believe that Waheguru is outside of us and beyond our reach, but this book shows how Waheguru is all around us, we just have to look a little harder to see it (you’ll see how this is possible in the book through the illustrations). Not only do children learn that Waheguru is everywhere, they learn how to connect to Waheguru through simran, it’s actually impossible to read the book without doing some simran. So they’re not only learning about the Gurus, their names, what they look like and how to connect with them, they’re actually putting into practice what Simran does to make the Gurus visible to him. This is a perfect book for all parents who want to teach their kids about the Gurus and Waheguru in a fun, interactive and engaging way. It truly is one of a kind and definitely a classic in the making!
This is just the first step to a phenomenon in modern day Sikhi. A storybook catered for all ages, all races and even all religions…you don’t need to be a Sikh to enjoy this book! But what’s most striking is the fact that it is all entirely seva…yes that’s right, selfless service, non-profit.
IM1313 are truly one of a kind, they’ve put so much hard work, passion & energy into each and every one of their projects…it’s been an absolute pleasure and privilege to have witnessed some of the work that goes on behind the scenes over the past few years.
