Encountering Sikhi – Lecture Series at the University of Derby (By Anisha Kaur Johal)

The University of Derby Multi Faith Centre is hosting a series of lectures focusing on a range of aspects of Sikhi in order to mark the 550th anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhi. The lectures will be taking place over a period of 6 weeks, commencing on Wednesday 6th March 2019. Each lecture will be start at 6:00pm and will consist of a lecture and discussion/Q&A session. It’s open to all ages, religions and occupations, so make sure to come along for an intellectually stimulating exploration into Sikhi.

The lecture topics are wide ranging and will cover areas such as history, literature, health and science. The presenters are work in a diverse range of fields and consist of Dr Haridal Singh Dhillon (former Biology Lecturer), Dr Sukhdev Singh Girn (GP), Parminder Singh (Solicitor), Kiran Singh (PhD Student) and myself Anisha Kaur Johal (Undergraduate University Student).

I will be the youngest speaker in the series where I will be focusing on Guru Nanak’s poem titled the Mool Mantar. As a third year undergraduate student at the University of Derby, I have embarked upon an array of academic endeavours in the field of Panjabi/Sikh Literature and will be developing this further in my dissertation, Masters degree and potential PhD. I will be showcasing my academic project titled ‘Lost in Translation: The Impact of Translation on Sikh Spiritual Scriptures’, that I undertook through being awarded the University Undergraduate Research Scholarship. It explores the concept of translation and how it has impacted Gurbani, particularly in the context of colonialism and the British Raj. I will be delving into the Mool Mantar in order to illuminate the variations in translations and impact on the contemporary predominant understanding of what the Mool Mantar actually means today.
