Legendary comedian Lenny Henry had guests in stitches all night with hilarious anecdotes. The audience glittered with some of the biggest names in the food industry and celebrities like boxer, Chris Eubank, Nitin Ganatra, Channel 4’s The Family, Rusty Lee and Radio 1’s Nihal Arthanayake.
This year’s judges’ scores were audited by Sheel Gill of KPMG to ensure complete confidence in the independent judging process. The panel of judges comprised of industry experts, including celebrity chefs Anjum Anand and Ravinder Bhogal, who is currently starring in Channel 4’s Food programme.
Mr Woon Wing Yip OBE, who picked up the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution in developing the ethnic food sector said: "I'm very surprised and I feel very honoured to be receiving The Lifetime Achievement Award at the World Food Awards. I feel I have achieved this with the help and support of my brothers, family, suppliers and customers without whom I wouldn't be where I am today.
“When I first arrived in the UK I had no money but worked hard. At Wing Yip we pride ourselves on supplying authentic Chinese food for the food enthusiast and the next generation will continue with this pursuit."
Neeraj Arora, Executive Vice President & Head of International Business, Sony Entertainment Network, which is supporting the awards, said: “The World Food Awards this year was an incredible success.
“World food is a rapidly expanding market and we’re proud to be recognising some of the industry’s most influential members and making the World Food Awards one of the most important dates in the food calendar.”
The eclectic range of entertainment reflected the diversity of the event and its nominees. Chinese lion dance group, Waterside Liondance wowed audiences with their colourful show, while the beautiful Taste of Brasil Latin American dancers kept the crowds spellbound with their exotic moves.
Electronic trip hop artist, Shri, gave a startling performance, African drummers, Drum Jam livened things up with their rhythmic beats and singing sensation Raghav entertained with a selection of his chart-topping hits. Acclaimed singer Katy Shotter kick-started the afterparty.
