NEERJA Movie Packs In An Emotional Flight – Movie Review
NEERJA is directed by Ram Madhvani, starring Sonam Kapoor and Shabana Azmi in the lead roles. The film is based on true events that unfolded in 1986 when a Pan Am Flight 73 was hijacked by terrorists. During these events, on-flight air crew member Neerja Bhanot did her utter best in ensuring safety of passengers were the priority, as a result she was the last one off the flight but was killed during her escape.
The movie is a heartbreaking tale, of a story narrated to represent what Neerja Bhanot had to go through, the bravery that she showed and in the end, it was just too much for her to battle through.
The director and writer put in a praiseworthy effort in portraying the scenario on the cinema screens. We get to witness a range of emotions that Neerja character experiences through the ordeal of hijacking. The film has an average look, making this film a decent viewing pleasure. The characters, performed well in putting through an emotionally heartbreaking subject matter. Sonam Kapoor packed in a performance that is ideally bound to rank her higher than before. She should now be considered as a worthy actress as she really does nails her role by giving a strong onscreen performance that is notably her best acting till this date. Shabana Azmi, playing the mother figure truly does bring the sadness to the film. What she has to go through knowing what has transpired for her daughter. Her scenes in particular keep you glued to the screens because it becomes so heartbreaking. Both these actresses deserve full recognition for delivering a performance that not only moves the screenplay forward, but also depict a strong mother and daughter bonding.
Neerja film does have a few flaws, most notable one would have been to have fellow air crew members giving their side to the story, more importance to their presence in the film, lack of dialogues from these aircrew members made it seem as if the film is purely just for Sonam Kapoor. Yes, she is the main lead but maybe another side to the story could have ensured more drama. I also felt that the film needed more thrilling build up, it lacked the edge of the seat anticipation. Being a hijacking and terrorists sub-genre film, it needs more intensity.
Overall, we rate the film 4/5. The film is a worthy watch and something that will keep you focused to the film, showing the bravery, intelligence and determination of one individual, Neerja Bhanot. The film does well in displaying her in an appreciative and respectable limelight. The cast does superbly in making this film an impressive watch. Sonam Kapoor really does pack in an emotional flight on this one. Do check out NEERJA movie out in cinemas right now.
