Exclusive Sham D Interview

First of all, tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from?

I'm a singer, a song-writer and a dancer and I'm one of those guys that get a crazy buzz from entertaining a crowd of people. I'm originally from East London.

For anyone, breaking into the music industry is a long hard road. There's a lot of
hopefuls out there, do you have any words of advice to give them?

Yes definitely, be sure to just be yourself and understand what you're trying to portray to your audience before doing so. Always remember that what you put in is what you'll get out of this industry and always remember the most important thing; your fans are number one!

Did you always want to be in this industry?

Yes, there's no biz like showbiz. This industry has its pros and cons but I think you've just got to look at it and think that if this is what you love doing, just do it for your fans.

What made you first decide that this was something you wanted to do? Was there anyone in particular who inspired you?

Ever since I can remember I've always wanted to entertain. I still remember the days when I would jump up on a small table and use it as a stage. I used to wear my sister's nursery hat to dance to Billie Jean, and I think that's when my family caught on to what made me happy. I started off by joining a dance group, until one day my older sister caught me singing and encouraged me to take it seriously and get vocal training.

Becoming a musician is something that's a little off the beaten track when it comes to an Asian career choice, or do you think families accept it now?

I think there's a lot more support given from families to people who want to become musicians now. I think as different generations change, views and music changes too.

Have you had a lot of support from your friends and family?

Most definitely! They have always supported me from day one. If it wasn't for them or my fans, I wouldn't be able to live my dream.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

It's got to be releasing my début single and it going all the way to the top spot. That was a crazy moment for me, watching it climb its way to the top and thinking “will it make it or won't it?” But it did thanks to all of my fans.

There's been some contention that you don't really have a music style of your own. A lot of people claim that you're just trying to follow in Jay Sean's footsteps. Would you like to say anything in response to this sort of criticism?

That's honestly the first time I've heard of this. I think Jay Sean is talented and has done extremely well and I'm sure there's a lot to learn from his success story. But I think its safe to say we are miles apart.

You’ve done a track with Mumzy Stranger entitled “I Know”. How did that collaboration come along?

We met in the studio to just catch up on life and music and all of a sudden Mumzy starts creating a simple beat. After a while we just started jamming to the beat and the rest is history! We didn't plan to make a track, one minute I'm sitting there eating this amazing Spanish omelette and the next we start working on 'I KNOW'. It was crazy fun and I learnt a lot from Mumzy.

How do you put a track together? Are you a lyricist or a composer at all, in the sense of putting pen to paper to write up some lyrics for your songs? Do you try and compose a melody in your head or on paper?

There's three ways which I have worked, one being a track written for me and I go away, learn it and come back and sing it. Secondly, a producer gives me a sample beat which I'd go away and write to and thirdly my favourite way to put a track together, come up with a melody in my head, start writing to it and then getting my producer to fit the music together.

What would you say your worst regret is, in the terms of your career? Something where if you could go back in time you would do or undo?
I try not to let myself ever regret anything. I do things that are good for me and I also make mistakes which I learn from. So if I could rewind time I'd just work much harder. I'm a strong believer in 'What's Done is Done, Move On!'

Now being a artiste and being in the spotlight brings you your fair share of fans and haters. What do you do to get away from it all? As in just being Sham Desai the person rather than Sham D the artiste?

I take a day off – come to think of it I'm due one real soon. Mr. Manager if you're reading, sort it out! I go see my family and friends and be silly and have lots of fun. Sometimes I get together with a few relatives and friends and play on the Wii or PS3 the whole day, when there's more people the games turn into more fun!

Moving away from your career, what’s your favourite holiday spot?

Florida in Summer Season of course, I love the fact they have so many Amusement Parks there as well as the heat and beaches, I cant wait to go there again. Anyone want to take me?

Do you have any hobbies that you can tell us about, whether it’s collecting stamps, vinyls, comic books etc?

My hobby is going to Live Concerts, I get hugely inspired after watching a good show. I love seeing how artists bring their character to stage and all the lighting, sets, special effects etc. Going to the Gym is also another hobby of mine.

And talking about comic books and you can only choose one. Batman Or Spider Man And why that one?

Tough choice but its got to be Batman, Simply because of the Bat-Mobile. In the most recent Batman the Bat-Mobile looks incredible. I would love one of those!

What projects have you got lined up for the future?

At the moment I'm on my 'Sham D Ringtone Tour'. Its my summer tour promoting my two new singles and also when performing, I tell people in the audience to switch on their blue-tooth devices on their mobile phones and whilst I'm singing and dancing away they receive their FREE Sham D Ringtone. The tour is going really well, its been great to see everyone that's come out to support, check out www.facebook.com/shamdmusic for all the dates in your area and www.twitter.com/sham_music would be great to see you all. Also look out for my first mainstream release toward the end of this year which I'm really excited about.

Lastly, any messages for your fans out there?
