Barkha Shewakramani – Designing For A Cause

Dramaqueen, the trendy fashion label by Middle East based designer Barkha Shewakramani is set to elevate the international fashion fraternity and landscape to new heights with its uber-stylish and affordable creations.

Having studied garment construction from the prestigious American University in Dubai, this young designer debuted in the fashion arena at Dubai Fashion Week in 2007 before spreading her wings to International capitals, such as London and Mumbai. Barkha’s personal journey and experiences continue to shape her fashion label, as she designs for a cause. Being diagnosed with Lupus, an illness in which the immune system attacks healthy tissue, she set up Dramaqueen to merge her passion for fashion with a strong social message. She is a member of the Arthritis Foundation in Dubai and heads up the organisation as a Relations Director.

Recently, she even collaborated with Dubai’s youngest author Malvika Shroff to release a book on the lives of Lupus patients. Barkha channels all proceeds and awareness from Dramaqueen and such collaborations to raise funds to support her charitable cause, The Lupus Foundation, an organisation she founded herself. She says: ‘If I hadn’t been diagnosed with Lupus I wouldn’t have understood the plight of people with major illnesses.’ Barkha is one of many public figures, some as renowned as Lady Gaga and Seal, who suffer from Lupus. Hailing from a business family that has over 40 years of expertise in textiles, Barkha is well versed with cutting edge design innovations.

Barkha’s collections embody her own personality; she designs for a fearless woman who is comfortable in her own skin.  When asked to elaborate on what inspired Dramaqueen, Barkha commented: ‘Every girl in her own way is full of drama and emotion. She has a longing to be treated like a princess, and every garment of mine makes her feel like a queen.’

The Dramaqueen label, which has found Barkha on various ‘best dressed’ lists, epitomises the modern woman and her search for affordable, versatile and well-designed clothes. The signature collections feature an array of design elements, from beautifully tailored day classics to retro party wear with embellishments and brocade stitching. The fabrics used reflect each occasion, from soft chiffons to raw silks and on-trend lace. Recently, Dramaqueen has been expanding its portfolio into different sectors, collaborating with a jewellery manufacturer to create a range of accessories that complete the Dramaqueen look. The brand is known to be young, hot and trendy, and was featured as one of five brands in the launch of The Press Room, which showcased Barkha’s ‘after-dark’ fashion.

Since its launch, Dramaqueen has quickly attracted the who’s who of Middle Eastern society, including socialites, leading corporates and even Bollywood royalty.
