Asian Network Uni Tour 08

Following on from the success of last year’s Uni Tour, Asian Network is pleased to announce this year’s six date musical feast, which will see the bass thumping sounds of Asian Britain come to Birmingham, London, Warwick, Leicester and Manchester (full details at the end).
This year’s tour continues the legacy of delivering the best DJs in British Asian music coupled with new breakthrough artists, who share the line up with some of the biggest names in Asian music.

The tour kicks-off on Tuesday 4 November at Gatecrasher, Birmingham, where internationally acclaimed artist, MOBO winner and headliner, Raghav, performs some of his hit tunes including tracks from his new album ‘Identity’ (releasing 24 November 08), featuring his latest single ‘My Kinda Girl’. Bhangra hotshot and Rishi Rich collaborator, Juggy D plays brand new material for the tour, whilst Top 5 chart smash ‘Wearing my Rolex’ rapper and MC legend Wiley also joins this year’s opening night line up.

Additional performances will be from urban success story Roach Killa with Joga and Surinder Rattan, as well as rising desi star Jaz Dhami.

Taking the UK urban scene by storm, R’n’B vocalist Zeekay will hit the Uni Tour stage for the first time and is sure to be a firm highlight. At 20 years of age, Zeekay has already co-written and vocally produced a track for R’n’B superstar Ginuwine and also toured with him and other supporting acts. Having signed a deal with Mr Skills, creator of Big Brova’s, this year’s Uni Tour will play host to music from Zeekay’s debut album, including his first single ‘My Moment’.
The tour also features the sounds of bhangra outfit Tigerstyle, whose musical history includes playing at last year’s Glastonbury festival and working with the likes of Sean Kingston, Gunjan and Bollywood hit maker, Pritam. Championed by top DJ’s all over the world, their powerful presence and vibrant music is unmistakable. The brothers will be bringing down the house with tunes from their new and much awaited album ‘Mystics, Martyrs, & Maharajahs’.
The Manchester event sees local lads Bonafide take to the stage, a talented duo hotly tipped for massive future glory and who will be joined on the night by Young Archie Assignment, a new and exciting Asian beats meets old skool R’n’B collective. Manchester’s finest Phat Aki & DJ Raf, will also be hitting the decks to drop their infectious beats.
Bhangra’s newest and talented offering Juz’D, sassy new female group Serese and award-winning trio 3Mix also perform on the tour and are set to make a huge impact on the student crowd. Asian Network DJ’s Panjabi Hit Squad, Kayper and Sonny Ji play throughout the events with appearances from Friction, Nihal, Ameet Chana, Nerm, Kan D-Man and DJ Limelight.

Mark Strippel, BBC Asian Network Head of Music, said, “The Asian Network Uni tour is now in it’s third year and year-on-year continues to showcase cutting edge British Asian artists.
From our DJ’s to the artists we champion, Asian Network is proud to be at the forefront of discovering and nurturing new talent and new music. This year, we’re especially excited to introduce Zeekay and Jaz Dhami who are definitely ones to watch.”   Bobby Friction, Asian Network’s specialist DJ said: “I’m really fired up about this year’s tour and the music speaks for itself.
We’ve got a line-up that perfectly reflects the different sounds emerging from the Brit-Asian scene at the moment, as well as mixing up some new players and artists with the bigger names. This year’s Asian Network tours once again spotlights the best British Asian music around as well as introduces new and cutting edge Asian talent to a student audience.”
